First Day with Flock Together Artists – RWA Residency Day 3

I am looking forward to working alongside Sara and Debbie to help document and discuss the work they are making and the associated activities they will be taking part in throughout their project ‘Flock Together’. Over the next few months I will be adding posts to this blog as an observer, peering at the inner workings of the duo and looking at how they are working collaboratively and are challenging ideas of authorship, drawing practice and the relationship between artist(s) and their subject.

Sara sets up a drawing task for visitors to use the projector as a machine to aid drawing. Interestingly there was already a projector in the space but in comparison to Saras projection, which aids drawing vs the Project a Sketch, which projects interpretations of an intended line (not always correctly!) It begs the question what role might technology play in making drawings?

Last week I had the chance to get a sneaky peak at both artists working during their third day in residence at the RWA’s colorful Drawing Lab. It was a busy moment with a dad and his two girls and a mum with her two boys. Both families were keen to find out more about the project and were particularly fascinated by the large drawings on the floor, created by Debbie’s drawing machine.

The boys got involved by drawing on a large scroll, marking out a projected still of the sheep flocking, taken from video footage from an earlier visit to Tony’s farm. It was great to see how they were interacting and learning to work collaboratively. As Sara had mentioned when I had asked her “how difficult it is for both artists to give over work or add to a piece the other has started?” – there’s a rule that neither artist is allowed to be precious about the work they hand over; the brothers were certainly taking this on board.

Meanwhile the two girls were experimenting with the ‘rucksack drawing-machine’, the suspended pens marking the journey of the sisters through the gallery, and as dad pointed out – one of the girls was enthusiastically energetic, while the other took her walk at a more peaceful pace! (You can see the differing results at the bottom)

Even the youngest visitor of the day and her dad get a chance to be involved, mark-making over the projected shadows, adding to the collaborative drawing on the wall.

I will be visiting the artists in the Drawing Lab again today and I am excited to see which visitors will come in to the space and how they will engage with the project. I’m looking forward to working alongside Debbie and Sara and to have the chance to be a part of such a fascinating project. I am pleased to be given the opportunity to gain an insight into how a project of this nature is curated, to develop my own ideas around drawing and collaborative practice and document the project through blog postsfacebook and twitter.
